Women competing in rodeo, movie

http://www.eclectic-horseman.com/.../product_info.php?products_id=690

This looks like a pretty interesting movie. In the preview, I had to cheer about the gal who swam the English channel faster than the fastest man. How much faster? Watch the preview!

I never even realized that women competed back then nor gave a thought to why they don't now. I think it's kind of funny that it's because the men don't want to share the limelight (and prize money) with the women, who were often better than the men they competed with. How interesting!

Women still competed on rough stock in small rodeos when I was rodeoing.   Had a girlfriend come off a bull and he pivoted on her belly...$20K in surgery to reattach everything...and that was 30 years ago.

Thanks I will check it out! And a big 'grimace' about  your friends stomach!

I used to rough ride saddle bronc only. I rode in ABC rodeos or as they were known in Aust rodaos!    The ABC was the Australian Bushman's Carnival & was the first rough riding assoc in Aust. Later came the ARRA Aust Rough Riders Assoc based on US & Canadian rules. The ABC was the amateur side & ARRA the profeesional side. Girls weren't allowed to enter any ARRA events.

Things are a bit different now but still no girls ride rough stock in APRRA (Aust Professional Rough Riders Assoc ). There are female events like steer undecorating & barrels, but on the whole very few women ride rough stock here at all anymore. Some women up in the gulf, across the top end & Kimberly do a bit, but it's a different world up there.

I also competed in the usual events that women went in like camp drafting, barrel racing & steer undecorating, plus team events like team penning, wild horse riding, wild cow milking  & hazed for male riders in steer wrestling.

Some women are entering break away roping & 'calf rope & tie' events these days.

Carol I've been reading that book, Cowgirls....man that is a good book! So entertaining. And I find myself feeling the same way, the parts where the women couldn't stand the idea of being cooped up in the house, couldn't wait to get outside and work with the land and the stock. Somewhere my life made a different turn (I was born on a farm, to a veterinarian for a dad but now live in the burbs with a family), but one day I'll get back there...!
