Working Horses in Egypt

I have put this post in this section although I doubt there is anything we can do for these particular animals. I know there are groups who work in Egypt helping donkeys & other work animals & maybe they are already helping where they can. However, obviously they can’t get to everywhere.

An Aussie journalist team discovered this scenario yesterday whilst reporting on the state of tourism after the political riots there. The little segment was just on TV news here.

Seems no-one wants to take horse or camel rides to look at the sites like the pyramids so the operators are killing their animals.

The journalist said he saw several horses dead in fields & the men he interviewed said they could no longer afford to feed their stock. But the photos showed dead fat horses laying next to large mounds of hay! Obviously the horses have had their throats cut or been shot but the camels would have been eaten. They could have died of thirst because they would be tethered. It wouldn’t surprise me if those guys just left their stock to die of thirst. They are cruel in the extreme to their stock anyway.

Clarissa,
I saw starved horses in the streets tied up while all the fighting around them, just standing there.  i feel so for them.  How do you help.  I certainly don't want to visit.

They truly hate Americans.  We can have a heart for good intentions all we want, but there are some things we can not do.  I would pray that the animals not suffer so at man's cost.

But, even here, there is a good rescue and a bad rescue.  the good rescue take in what they can afford and cares for them.

The bad one takes in 100's of horses and Greyhound dogs and they are all starving. Finally, our state has decided to do something about them as some of the horses lay dead on the ground.  I sure they found some dead dogs, too.

It a sad day, that they do bleeding hearts and take your money and will not feed them.

The sad thing is the good rescue has a contract that if you decide not to keep the horse, they get it back.  One horse that was with them was turned over to the bad rescue and the previous owner denies that there was a contract.

So they are having to prove the contract does exists and they are the good guys.  It's a messed up world.

Yes, I was shocked to see the live horses that were so thin, skin on bones in the city with fighting going on.  Can you imagine what it is to be one of those horses?  As much as we care for ours?  Can you imagine?

What a sad thing, Clarrisa. these people surely seem very angry and mean. i don't know much about them but the poor animals. If you are going to kill them at least use them for meat.
