You can't fix stupid

When I first got Frost and he was so special to me I could not talk around one lady because her SIL had saddled up the gentle horse and put her son in the saddle and while she was getting on her horse fire ants bit the other horse and he took off running.  The boy's foot hung in the stirrup and he did not make it. It was so sad.  I never let a small child actually be alone with my horse.  I have to be on the other end of the rope and on the ground to do a quick grab if necessary.

2nd ride....tied into the saddle...scary video.

Yeah, I was terrified watching that video.  Not even having a hold on that horse.  OMG people are so DUMB..

Hmmmm! Apparently this place was a business that did this for many years! Check it out!

And there's a local gal that chimed in and said she had used them before and she raved about it. Very interesting! Still, me personally, I wouldn't do it.

Reminds me of the pony rides I always looked forward to (late '50's early '60's) when we went to the Kansas City Zoo.  The highlight of the visit was to get belted onto a pony then pray it went faster than a walk.  Or, worse, stop.  There may have been a law that required children to be affixed to the ponies.

How can parents be so stupid???  I would never let my son ride the horses alone.  I was on the horse with him.  I cant believe they were belted in!  Notice the pony's ears were pinned most of the time too.

Ha ha, I recall being at a horse show when I was younger. A boy on a pony offered me a ride. All I recall is being on the pony and hauling ass across the fairgrounds. What a blast! My mom was p*&%$d after that though!!

Bouncy, bouncy...jumpy jumpy....   Austin's mamma just doesn't understand the nature of what could happen.

Even, my horses calm as they are...change in the blink of an eye which is why I make sure my farm daughter is here, because they so know they can get the one up on hubby.

He is not horsey in any way.  He wants to treat them with treats and thinks he can walk them one ton Belgians with no problem from one place to another  with a rope around their necks.  Mind you he does that because they will not allow him to halter them...

So I am out of town and thinking om  Maggie get over there before he wakes up and halter the horses, period! Because, he does not have a clue about their strength, bucking, kicking , rearing...just because they are big does not mean....

So yes, strap that child to the horse and what you see might be what you get...then, you sue the horse people because you wanted the ride?  That is why I am all for a slow walk, period when it comes to sharing....

I just do not share my horses with just everyone.

I also have seem my "dead broke gelding" get scared sh**less and almost do some uncharacteristic stuff  Just happens and if ya don't know that then ya got no biz messin' with them at all  We all know better and STILL get hurt now and then.

OMG!!!!!!!!!! Yep, they were strapped in!!!! If that pony took off...it makes me shudder You can't fix stupid is right.

They don't even have to spook.  Imagine if the pony trotted and the boy started falling off and THAT scared the pony.   There was a 3-year-old child killed here on a trail ride when his dead-broke buddy "Old Joe" tripped and went down, crushing the child.  It was a freak accident.

We had a friend visit here with his child.  They were at the barn petting Baby.   He was giving Baby some cookies and letting his daughter pat her.   His daughter was not quite a year old and it was in the summer.  He held her bare foot up to Baby's mouth to feel the softness of her muzzle...well, his hands still smelled like cookies and Baby couldn't SEE what was going on under her nose...so she bit the offered cookie.   It was absolutely crazy!

Never underestimate people, they really don't KNOW anything.

This was on a friend's FB page and I link it to mine with this thread in mind!

I'm just saying, I would not do this with a horse and child.  i have had pictures of Flint with a child in the saddle and I am out of the camera's view, but not out of the horse's or child's range.  And I have to have ridden him and know what he is like even if I do trust him.

Really in this situation, it's up to the people who operate the "ride" to take every precaution and do the responsible thing.   Parents just want their kids to have the experience of riding a pony and most times like Carol said they don't really know anythign about horses except hat people ride them.    They trust that the people who operate the business know what they are doing.

That little boy was having a blast for sure, but it was quite a risk.    Did you notice there was what looked like an adult, riding a bigger horse? She kept checking around at the other riders...I wonder if she was the pace setter for the ponies.

I got the impression she was 'chasing' the ponies to make them trot. I could hear a lot of either clucking or kissing l ast time I watched the video.

someone said, "They don't even have to spook.  Imagine if the pony trotted and the boy started falling off and THAT scared the pony."

I watched from across the field to the neighboring farm this EXACT thing happen. All I could do was watch as the child fell down. Luckily nobody was hurt, just shaken up. I hate to have such a young child permanently turned off horses for this very reason. Better to wait till they're older, stronger and have better balance and teach them slow.
