WOW!! bit - pretty scarey. Hope you're healing up ok. I know how much a head can bleed.
Your post is a timely reminder for us as well. We've been getting a bit blasé about bringing the CS lately.
As Pat says, "Trust that they'll respond but be ready to correct - not more one than the other". So in a way, not having the CS with us can mean that we're out of balance in that principle. |

Bit. I will be thinking of you.
These things happen so quickly. Your post has also been a timely reminder for me too.
I've been taking my stick when I feed hay first thing in the morning but wasn't taking it when I walked through later to open a gate.
It only takes a bit of extra exuberance (especially on wet ground where Boots can do slide stops of everal meters) or getting in the way when Gypsy goes to tell Boots off, and I could be caught in the crossfire. Gypsy can get very jealous if I pay attention to Boots.
Will remember to take it every time now. |

I used to, but Hawk has been great, we haven't had the issues of him barging or trying to bite, and my hand block as been enough. Two days ago I was feeding. I have four buckets, spaced apart and everyone knows their bucket. Hawk decided he was going to go for Bits bucket, so I drove him back with my hands. Meanwhile, storm is blowing in, and there is a frantic feel from him. Instead of going back, Hawk went up. When he came down, it was on top of me. His front hoof hit my head, the other one hit my arm. I went down, head split open, lots and lots of blood, and I still had to walk down to the shop where, thankfully, Tony's friend was working on a truck. 10 stitches later, and a day of horrible headaches and nausea, I sit here thinking about what I should have done.
With anything we do, there is the possibility of a bad outcome. Driving, skiing, riding horses, or just taking a shower. Doing whatever we can to decrease those possibilities is important. And never ever thinking that you doing a little is going to be enough. |
I hope you feel better soon - what a nasty experience. _________________ Please support Equine Victims of Abuse/Neglect by supporting Quest Equine Welfare in rehabilitating these amazing horses.
