Update on Montana horses tails being cut and Arabian horses in similar situations.

NetPosse.com News Brief MO:
Horses' Tails Stolen in Separate Incidents in September and October
The owners of one horse in Montana have offered a reward for information
on the perpetrators.

November 2, 2010

Horse owners in Montana are unsettled after two separate incidents of
horses' tails being cut off during the past month.
Two horses in the town of Three Forks had their tails cut off on October
17, and a third lost part of his mane. A horse in Dillon had his tail cut off
earlier this fall. Bob and Connie Riley, owners of the Dillon horse, have
put up a $500 reward for information leading to the thief or thieves.
Information should be given to the Beaverhead Sheriff's Department at
406-683-3700
In all cases, the tails were cut off just below the bone so the horses were
not injured in the incidents. However, they will take years to grow back
and leave the horses with very little defense against flies in the meantime.
The tail thefts may be a random act of vandalism, but it is also possible
that the thieves plan to sell the tail hair to crafts people. Horse hair is
used for decoration on belts, bridles, and other western-themed items. A
long tail can also be sold to make a tail switch to supplement the natural
hair of show horses in some breeds and disciplines.
In an unrelated incident, an Arabian horse competing at the U.S. Nationals
in Oklahoma had its tail cut off just below the bone. The horse was
uninjured, but was left without fly defense, and without the long, flowing tail
favored in the Arabian show ring. Tail switches are prohibited in the show
ring for Arabians. In this case, the theft appears to be an act of sabotage.
According to an article on TulsaWorld.com, the horse still went on to show
without the tail and placed in the top ten.
Implementing theft prevention techniques around the farm may also deter
vandals and thefts who commit this type of crime. Using motion-activated
lights around the farm and driveway, limiting access to pastures and stable area
from the road, and networking with neighbors who will help recognize
unusual activity at the farm will make the property less vulnerable.

Really sad.  Not someone you want as your trainer:

NetPosse.com World News Brief UK: Horse trainer 'murdered ex-boyfrie
Posted by: "idahonc@aol.com" idahonc@aol.com   idahonc
Sun Jan 16, 2011 8:34 am (PST)

You may not want this trainer mad at you....
Horse trainer 'murdered ex-boyfriend then drank wine and watched his body
burn'
A woman murdered her former boyfriend and then sat drinking red wine on her
patio as she watched his body burn on a bonfire, a court has heard.

Kirsti Windsor is accused of killing David Langdon (inset) Photo: SWNS

By Victoria Ward 6:11PM GMT 13 Jan 2011

Kirsti Windsor, a horse trainer, is accused of killing David Langdon when
he refused to move out of the remote cottage they shared.

She then told police he had “committed suicide by jumping on the bonfire”,
it was alleged.

Mr Langdon’s charred remains, found surrounded by burning tyres and doors,
were so badly burned that a cause of death has yet to be established.

Worcester Crown Court heard that the couple had lived together in the
detached cottage in Wormelow, Herefordshire, since February 2008.

But Windsor ended their four-year relationship after a series of violent
rows.

She ordered the 40-year-old gardener to leave the house when he tried to
strangle her, it was claimed.

She then went to the Lake District for the weekend but when she returned on
August 10, 2008, she discovered he was still there.
Langdon’s remains were discovered three days later.
Windsor, 38, is charged with murdering him between August 9 and 12, 2008
and perverting the course of justice.
Christopher Millington QC, prosecuting, told the jury: “It is completely
inconceivable that David Langdon did this to himself and got into this
position as a result of an accidental fall.
“Only two people know what happened to Mr Langdon at the cottage, one of
them is dead and the other is Miss Windsor.
"Unhappily for Miss Windsor, it proved more difficult to incinerate a human
body outdoors than she realised."
He said Windsor had entertained her friend Katie Brown, 31, a local
barmaid, at the cottage on Wednesday August 13 and the pair had sat on the patio
drinking wine.
A large bonfire in the garden was allegedly seen and smelt by a number of
villagers.
Mr Millington added: "The purpose of the fire was not to dispose of garden
waste, it was to burn the body of David Langdon and thereby completely
destroy the evidence of his unlawful killing at the cottage.
"It is clear this was no ordinary bonfire of wood and logs – it consisted
of two tyres, a body, and two wooden doors fuelled with petrol and paraffin.”

Windsor called the police at 7.50pm on August 14 and told an operator: “
This is kind of an emergency. I think my ex-boyfriend has committed suicide on
the bonfire in my garden."
When officers attended the scene they discovered the charred remains of Mr
Langdon lying facedown on the bonfire.
Mr Millington told the court that Windsor enlisted the help of Brown to
help her dispose of the body.
Brown denies perverting the course of justice by helping to dispose of the
body. But the court heard that, days after Mr Langdon was discovered, she
was overheard in her local pub saying: "I've already disposed of one body, I
can get rid of another."
Windsor, dressed in a green tweed jacket and scarf, fought back tears as
the court was shown pictures of Mr Langdon's burned remains.
He was described as “outgoing and extrovert” and was affectionately known
as “The Horse” by villagers, the court heard.
He had lived abroad in France, Italy, Canada and New Zealand and had plans
to travel again after the breakdown of the couple’s relationship.
Windsor, who has been self employed since October 1997, had previously
worked as a stable hand in France, Ireland, the US and Dubai.
The trial, expected to last seven weeks, continues.

NetPosse.com News Brief OK: Stolen horses, saddles lead to felony charge

February 9, 2011

CHICKASHA OK
Stolen horses, saddles and other tack led to two felony charges filed
against a Pauls Valley man in Grady County District Court this week.
Robert Scott Claiborne, 21, was charged with one felony count of larceny
of domestic animals and one felony count of second degree burglary.
Court documents show that on Sept. 24 a business north of Rush Springs
reported to the Grady County Sheriff's Office the theft of two horses and four
Mock Brothers Saddles, along with five bridles and bits along with other
tack.
Special Agent Michael Hooper, who is assigned to the Investigative
Services Unit with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry
(ODAFF), reported that one of the horses stolen was described as a 10-year-old
sorrel gelding with a "skunk" tail. In addition, some of the stolen tack
were pull collars with the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association logo on them.
Claiborne was discovered to be in possession of one of the stolen horses
in October while roping calves for a Wynnewood man, records show. The
defendant told Hooper he had purchased the horse and saddle but had no records of
the purchase. The man Claiborne said he bought the animals and equipment
from said he did not sell them, records show.
Witnesses place Claiborne and the distinct characteristics of his truck in
the vicinity of where the horses were stolen during the timeframe they
were stolen, Hooper reported.
Upon conviction, the crime of larceny of domestic animals is punishable by
imprisonment for three to 10 years. The crime of second degree burglary is
punishable by imprisonment for two to seven years.

NETPOSSE NEWS - GENERAL

AntiHorseThiefAssociationThe Anti-Horse Thief Association

CLARK COUNTY, Missouri--In the age before the automobile, horse theft was a serious offense. After all, a horse was a person's transportation and, in the case of a farm animal, a source of income. As the United States was in its growth stages, horse thieves flourished in the frontier areas of the country. A thief could steal a horse and hurry him across state lines or into the Indian territories where local authorities could not easily follow. It was easy, and it was lucrative.

The AHTA was not a group of vigilantes, who would chase after horse thieves, catch them and hang them from the nearest tree. They worked hand in hand with law enforcement, gathered evidence and testified in court to punish horse thieves and other criminals. This is probably why the organization grew so large. It was a way for law-abiding citizens to bring order into their lives by working with law enforcement rather than becoming helpless victims.

There is a modern-day version of AHTA. It is called Stolen Horse International. Debi Metcalfe started it in 1996 after her horse, Idaho, was stolen. Read full article.

"PLEASE COME BACK"

I don't know where you are

  right now,

I look in the stall and

  don't see you there.

I love you more than anything,

And hope you know that I still care.

Tears well up in my eyes,

Because I might never

  see you again.

But please know that in my heart,

You will always be my best friend.
