I finally watched the Buck movie and may be the first in the country to have one. Luckily it plays on the cheap DVD player but is the wrong region code for the better quality one.
I think that Buck was right not to take a chance with tackling that Yellow stud on the ground himself. Famous horseman are set up with other people's dangerous horses which have been made into monsters by their owners. In an interview Buck says that people deliberately do this to test him and pities the sorry humanity that would want to do that. In the case of the yellow horse they were honestly looking for help but at what risk? Monty Roberts got set up in Scotland with a dangerous stallion which he won over from the ground but the old man nearly got killed.
I contacted Cindy Meel the director about showing Buck here for non-profit educational purposes. I am not sure that his methods are the as gentle as can be, but nor were Ray Hunt's. Still though, it is a great piece of historical documentary and his methods are way better than that which went before in conventional horsemanship and his love for horses shines through. In the directors' commentary you can hear him talking about his horses characters and he says he does not sell horses because he falls in love with them. Again, horses are not money in his book but then he has a big enough ranch to afford this. I think that there is nothing wrong with selling horses and can sell ones I love if it seems the right thing to do since I can offer other a better chance in life.
What impresses me is that Cindy's reply made it clear that the message of non-violence that the film conveyed is more important than any concern about money. She is out of pocket from the project despite having sold the rights to a film company.
How nice that Buck's message is being spread by his students -- It is true to Bill Dorrance's point that horsemanship is passed from friend to friend and is not for sale.
Here endeth my review.
