As far as the roll, its been windy for two days and he's being a pill.  We have a bear hanging out in the neighborhood.  I dont want to get hurt so that roll is going to have to wait until I catch him settled down.  Hopefully when I get home tonight, because last night was NOT an option.

Those words "wind" and "bear" would stop me in my tracks, too - lollol

Once Upon A Time, my friends and I were riding in the mountains when, all of a sudden, our well-seasoned trail horses started to get really amped up.  We knew there was a valid reason and hoped whatever "it" was didn't land on us from the top of a rock.  We just kept inching them along, hoping for the best and making a lot of loud chatter, as we really wanted to get back to camp.

We came around a bend in the logging road to where there was a huge dump --- and still steaming bear dung.

We have always been a fearless bunch of gals and I am the only one that never hunted, but let me say all of us were never so glad to get to the road and ride it back to camp as we were that day help

I've only run across tracks and scat when riding, but I have a pretty big bear hanging out in the woods behind my house.  I saw him ambling around back there a couple weeks ago.  Paco did way better than Ty.  I thought Ty was going to have a heart attack.

I am confused.  Paco now has some flaring at the toe in the fronts about 1/3 to 1/2 inch from the hairline.  He hasnt got into any sweets and doesnt get pasture.  His toes are rasped way back (I admit I was too aggressive) as you can see in the pics.  Can this be from a few weeks ago when he was wearing shoes?

(I am NOT blaming the shoes OR the farrier, just his excess growth you see in the before pics.)

Suz do you mean the new growth is smaller in circumference than the older growth & there is a definite line between the two?

If that is what you are refering to, I think it is usual for horses to develop smaller feet from the outset when shod. In other words they immediately begin growing smaller feet which means the new growth at the coronet is smaller in circumference & causes a deliniation ring.

It was the only thing I could see on those previous photos you posted. If what I mentioned is not what you were refering to are you able to post 1 photo with an arrow on it to indicate what you are refering to?

The 1st almost 1/2 inch of growth is definately tighter. This horse doesnt usually get any growth rings.  The hoof just grows out nice and smooth.  He is lame today from an accident yesterday, but was sound on all 4 feet.

I noticed the ring a couple days ago, it is not present at all in the photos I posted before.

I tried to get pics the day I saw the ring, but none turned out, they are all really fuzzy due to low light.

I will try to get more pics today.
