Just thought I'd share incase anyone else needs to know.
I'm treating Bubba for an ulcer with omeprazole. (Thanks to Elise for making me aware of ulcer problems in horses)
omeprazole that works to heal the ulcer is found in two product names.
UlcerGard: Marketed for prevention. The tube is seperated into 4 doses.
GastroGard: Marked for healing. The tube is one dose.
Both tubes have EXACTLY the same medicine, same amount in the tube. Packaged by the same company, but marketed different. ulcerGard is usually less expensive.
Many people who travel, train, show, race, rodeo etc..... give their horses the gastrogard to help prevent ulcers from croping up during stressful times for their horse.
Need some? http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_equine.html It's on sale here for 27.95/tube if you buy 10. Sale ends 5/3, this is the lowest price I've found I paid $47 for one tube at one of our local vets...my regular vet is charging me $37/tube.
omeprazole- is also the same medicine in prilosec and other acid reducers for humans...just in a very large dose paste form for horses.
Just thought I'd share. _________________ -Becky

Becky, when you give this, did you give it at a particular time? Before meals, after, in between? _________________ Carol Nudell

Becky I'd also be interested to know when you gave this. My older gelding acts as if his tummy distresses him. Not colic just annoyed and anxious at what he perceives to be time to eat.
Thanks

Sandra, I had the same problem with Carina. I gave her a regiment of this and it doesn't seem to have done anything. All I can do is keep grass hay in front of her all the time. In the summer she has pasture nibble, so no symptoms then. _________________ Carol Nudell

Interesting information, Becky. Thanks for sharing.
Good to know that both meds are the same, but that the UlcerGard is cheaper. I think more and more companies are doing things like this...
I'd be interested in more information as you continue treatment and whether or not you think it worked for your horse. _________________ ~Mary
